"If
it be true good wine needs no bush", then this play needs no
repetition of the universal acclaim it received in the 50's. In
the post-war Renaissance of the American Musical, Guys and
Dolls stands out as exceptional and original.
The play based on a story by Damon Runyon is described as a
fable, and like all good fantasies, the characters are
recognisable as real and entertaining people; even their names
give a phonetic pleasure when mouthed - Nicely-Nicely Johnson,
Benny Southstreet, Sky Masterson, Rusty Charlie being as
descriptive as their ancestors in the Restoration Comedies. ~
Richard Carey
The action takes place around and on Broadway, with the exception
of a few hours in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
